This fall experience the heartbreaking and heartwarming story about family that is Sarah, Plain and Tall presented by Debut Theatre Company, from October 11-26.
At the turn of the century, on the windswept plains of Kansas, a widower farmer and father of two places a desperate advertisement for a wife. On the wave washed beaches of Maine, strong willed Sarah chooses to reply, “I will come by train. I will wear a yellow bonnet. I am plain and tall.” She arrives to find that her possible new family is not what she expected. Although son Caleb adores her, daughter Anna struggles with accepting a new mother figure, while Jacob and Sarah constantly differ in opinion. Far from the home she knows, trying to navigate this grieving family the best she can, Sarah must decide in one month’s time whether or not to stay; and the family must decide if they want her to.
Patricia MacLachlan’s premier novel, won the 1986 Newbery Medal for distinguished Children’s literature; the 1986 Scott O’Dell Award for historical fiction; and the 1986 Golden Kite Award for excellence in children’s fiction. On the surface, it is a sweet love story about family, but there are much deeper themes of loneliness, acceptance, coping with change and the role that the arts play in connection, healing and self-expression.
